The 'Views' feature gives the option to sub divide your timeline into a number of saved 'Views'. Use the search feature to display specific Events, adjusting the layout and save the results as a ‘View’. Saving different ‘Views’ allows a complicated timeline to be divided into a number of layers. A good technique is to use the 'Home' View as an 'Over View' showing a summary of the major events and then create a number of other ‘Views’ showing details of the sections that make up the main ‘Home View'. Quick summary of Views Home View The Home View is an unsaved open View which will update as any new Event is created. As you develop your timeline you may want to create additional Views. This will have 2 effects on the Home View: 1. You may not want to show certain Events in the Home view but they are still shown. 2. Events will not hold their on screen position. After additional Views have been created the Home View will need to be treated in the same any as any other View, unwanted Events will need to be removed (Blowaway) and onscreen positions will need to be saved. A good tip is to use the Blowaway to create the Home View - remove unwanted events and then use Update from Screen to save the action. This allows the Home View to be very flexible; Events can be removed or restored with the Blowaway, newly created Event will be shown for easy of editing etc and then easily removed if not needed.
Creating new Views Use the search features to create new Views, this allows for a more structured and controlled enviroment - only cirteria matching those set in the saved View will be displayed. Saving one or more Groups to a View allow just those Events in the selective Groups to be displayed in that View. Use Blowaway to fine tune the View. Save position changes back to the View. To display a saved View All saved Views are listed in the Views drop down list, click the arrow to display the list. Click on the View name you wish to display and that View will be displayed.

To add Blownaway events back into a View use the Restore Events - Edit menu from main tool bar. Once the events are shown use the Update From Display to save these events to the View.

How to create a multi-Viewed timeline Taking the application of a ‘daily site diary’ for a construction site, each working day of the year needs to have a separate Event created containing information such as employees who were on-site, number of sub-contractors, any health and safety issues etc. At the end of a working year this site diary timeline would actually contain a minimum of some 250 - 300 Events. Showing all Events all the time would be useless, so a top level ‘Home’ view showing the year and the months has been created, as well as a view for each of the months of the year. These 'Months Views' contains each working day for every month. Home View
How to create multiple Views
Entering dataThe easiest way to create a View is by using a simple ‘display Group’ style search or a ‘Group and time’ search. To use the Group search all Event will need to be placed in a Group. The data within this on-site diary example timeline has been arranged as follows: · A Group has been created for each day of the week, i.e. Group = Monday; Group = Tuesday etc. As each new Event is created it is entered into the correct Group; all Mondays go into the Group Monday etc. · All of the months of the year go into a Group called ‘Months’. · The event Year 2009 is in a Group ‘Years’.
Home View To create the 'Home' View the Advanced Search was used to display all Events within the Groups Months & Year. Go to Search / Advanced / de-select all Groups apart from Months and Year. This search will display all Events within the selected Groups setting the time axis according to the first and last Events.
Saving the View Saving a View will save the display screen as it is set at the point of saving. From the Views Options control (highlighted above) select Create New View.... give the View a name and click OK. Now click on Save Current View...the View will now be saved. Month View To create the 'January' View, the Advanced Search was used to search within a set time frame and within selected Groups.
Go to Search / Simple time range= 1/1/2009 to 31/1/31 / Advanced = de-select Group - Year.
This search will display only Events within the time period 1/1/2009 to 31/1/2009 AND within the selected Groups:
January View Saving the View Saving a View will save the display screen as it is set at the point of saving. From the Views Options control (highlighted above) select Create New View.... give the View a name and click OK. Now click on Save Current View...the View will now be saved.
How to update a View If a View is edited i.e new Events added or Events re-positioned the View must be re-saved. Show the View to be updated. Make changes and click Options select, Save Current View. The View will now be updated. Adding new Events to a timeline with Views
The timeline application is effectively split into three parts, the database, the search engine and the display area. Events are held in the database and displayed if they are ‘called’ by the search engine.
A View is effectively a saved search, (to create a View you search the database to call Events) and saved ‘event position’ (Events can be positioned in different locations is different Views).
If new Events are added to the database they will not have an ‘event position’ in any Views they are displayed in. New Events will need to be manually positioned in each View they appear in and each View will need to be re-saved.
