What are the system requirements? PC using a Microsoft Windows operating system 2000, XP, Vista or Win7. Currently Timeline Studio software is not directly compatible with any Mac platforms. How to change time units? Time units range from a few minutes through to a billion years. Create a New timeline and use the New Timeline Wizard; select your time range from the 'Set Time Range' page. It is possible to change the timeline units from within the Timeline application, from 'Setup tab' on the top toolbar and select from the 'Time units' drop down list. It is advised that you change timeline units before any data has been added as changing the timeline units will cause changes to your data. What are the display options? Display options are a Timeline; information can be exported into Word and Excel. Timelines can be display vertically or horizontally the axis can be positioned top or middle of the screen. It is also possible to turn off the Timeline axis but still show events positioning correctly.
How to position Events? All Events are given a on screen 'grid' position. This 'grid position' is saved to the data base; each time an Event is displayed it will return to this save position. To change an Event's saved position just drag'N' drop the Event to a new location. Events can have different positions in different Views; adjust Event location and save View. How to Display a Timeline? Firstly, the Timeline software is supplied blank; you will need to input data before is can be displayed. See data entry section Once information has been entered Event will be shown to update the Timeline display, use 'show all' button or use the search box. 'Show all' displays all Events in the data base. As your timeline increase in size start to use search functions to call Events. See Search Function below. Search function? Timeline software can search for either keywords, search tags, within selected groups or for a Time period. Click the search button to show search box. Time search - enter a time period with the start of the time period you wish to search first and then end of the time period second. For example adding 1234 1760, will display events between 1234 to 1760. How to create Timelines in BC? To generate an Event which in BC just enter the date as a minus number for example 10BC should be entered as -10. If you need an Event to start at 500BC and run to 15BC enter -500 into Start box and -15 into End box. For an Event which starts at 50BC and run to 100AD enter -50 into Start box and 100 into End box. My Timeline application does not appear to work correctly Sometimes downloads get corrupted. Try making these simple timelines to check your Trial is stable. Open the Timeline software and create a New timeline, the New Timeline Wizard box should pop up. Using the Next button and 'Help me! Fill in examples link', continue through the wizard and press the Finish button. Has a simple 3 event timeline been created? Closed and re-open the Timeline application. Create a second New timeline, again use the wizard, but this time select different timeline units, maybe Historical. On the Add Events page again use the 'Help me.Fill in with example' link, with the blank boxes filled move through the wizard using the Next and Finish buttons. Has a simple 3 event timeline been created in the time period of years? If these simple tests fail, the Timeline Trial is corrupt, completely uninstall the Timeline application, adjust your Anti-Virus settings and download the Timeline Trial again. Import from Excel does not work Excel is a very powerfully software application allowing data to be in many different formats and cell configurations and the Timeline software needs a few minimum criteria met to function correctly. Generally it's a case of formatting the excel sheet to ensure the data is correct for the timeline. If you cannot see all columns of your excel spreadsheet when using the 'View data' function (part of Timeline import process) then the data in those columns is not set to 'text' or 'number' in the spreadsheet. Ensure the column to be Imported into the 'Name and description' fields within the Timeline app is 'General or Text' within the Excel spreadsheet. Ensure the column to be Imported into the 'Start' and 'End' fields are 'Custom dd/mm/yyyy' within the Excel spreadsheet for timelines using the units of Calendar dates. Ensure the column to be Imported into the 'Start' and 'End' fields are 'number - no decimal places' within the Excel spreadsheet for timelines using the units of Years, Days, Hours and Distance. Ensure the 'Start' time value is earlier than the 'End' time value. Export / Import testing A simple test for the Excel Import / Export process is to create a timeline and then export it into Excel, save the spreadsheet. Import this spreadsheet into a new timeline; remember to ensure the timeline time units are adjusted to suit the data within the spreadsheet. If this process works, it shows that all software programs are working OK and can transfere data. Any problems still encountered are most likely down to data type and can be sorted out by changing the data category - 'Format cells' section in Excel. See above Import for Excel for data settings.
