An introduction to the timeline 'Event', how to create a new Events, and how to add content into Events.
Timeline Studio’s timeline software is a tool for creating rich informative timelines. As the point of downloading and opening the timeline software it does not contain any data, only the potential to show data on a timeline axis once it has been added. To add information into the timeline application you will need to create what we term an ‘Event’. An Event is simply something that has happened or will happen in the future. Each Event must have a name and a time / date reference in order to be shown on the timeline. Event can be simple, i.e. just a name and a date or they can be have additional text, images and links embedded. To access the Event 'Content' move the cursor over the Event and click. Creating Events Timeline Events are added in 2 ways. As you create a new timeline you will use the New Timeline Wizard, here you are encouraged to enter the basic detail for the first 3 events. Further Events can then be added from the Edit tab using the New Event button.

New Event - Edit Event box Clicking the New Event button will display the Edit Event dialog box. From here all the necessary data can be added to create an Event. The minimum data required to create an Event is Name and a Time value; all over fields are optional. As each Event MUST have a Name and at least a Start date, the Edit Event box has been preloaded a name and a date – Just edit these fields with your data.
Title etc This tab contain the data fields which will be directly displayed on the timeline. Name – Whatever is entered into here is shown on the timeline display. Start & End – The Start and End fields set the position on the Timeline axis. If you entered 1973 into the Start box your Event will be position at 1973 on the timeline axis. If 1987 is entered into the End box the Event will be shown starting a 1973 and continuing onto 1987. To create a point in time use just the Start field; for a period of time use both Start and End fields. The values of the Start and End will change dependant upon the timeline units you are working in. See more on Start and End dates and time units
Groups (optional use) Using the drop down list you can add the Event currently being edited into a Group. The Group will determine characteristics of how the Event is shown e.g. Font and Bar colour etc. Groups will need to be created before they will show in the drop down list. See Groups
Has Parent (optional use) Using the ‘Has parent’ check box and drop down list you will be able to add the Event currently being edited into another timeline Event. The Parent / Child relationship allow you to ‘clean up’ the timeline display by not showing all the events all the time. Child Events are embedded into Parent Events and are shown upon request. For example, if you were making a timeline of all of the days and months of 1 year this would give over 360 events, too many to usefully show at one time. Embedding all of the days into the appropriate month would allow you to show the 12 months and then upon request show the days of each month. See more detail on Parent / Child relationships.
Event Content - text, images and Links Description (optional use) Area for free text that is not displayed on the timeline, but is shown when an Event has been 'clicked-on' to show the 'Event content page'.
Pictures (optional use) 3 images can be added to each Event; these images are shown in the Event content page. Event Images are entered via ‘Pictures’ tab. Click on the yellow file button to navigate to the images you require for each Event. Images need to be jpeg or Bitmap format. If the image size (pixel or file weight) is large the Timeline program will give the option to reduce the image size. Big images will slow down the Timeline’s performance.
Notes (optional use) Area for free text not displayed anywhere on the timeline. This area can be used for reference notes and appendices.
Links (optional use) Links allow additional files from your PC / system or webpages from the internet to be linked to the Event content.
